Do you ever realize, far too late in life, that you’ve been pronouncing a word wrong for years?
I still remember the day, when I was about 5, when my mom realized that I was pronouncing my own name wrong.
I knew that the way my family said my name sounded a lot different from the way the kids at school said my name, but I chalked it up to the fact that everything was different about school and home.
It took me a long time to realize that my family spoke a different language at home. In pre-school I thought that everyone spoke English at school and Farsi at home.
So I just thought there was a “school” pronunciation of my name, and “home” pronunciation of my name.
Anyway, I just realized today…at 26…that I’ve been pronouncing the world “only” like “omly.” I thought it was one of those silent-letters-replaced-with-other-letters sorta deal.
But no.
I’m wrong. And I’ve been wrong for 26 years.
…at least I know now?
